EFL preview: Wrexham look to close the gap during international break

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will not be distracted by the excitement surrounding the League One promotion race as they face old rivals Stockport at Edgeley Park.

“It’s very difficult to predict,” Parkinson said. Teams from third-placed Wrexham to 10th-placed Bolton sit on just five points.

“Barnsley suddenly appear in fourth place, there are teams in 14th when you look at them and think they could be there,” Parkinson added.

“Some people (the leaders) look at Wycombe and think they’re a surprise package but they’re a team that hasn’t been in the Championship that long ago and they’ve always been high up in that division so I’m not sure they’re a surprise .

“There are a lot of teams that will take their chances, but it’s still early in the season. We have to keep our heads down and concentrate on what we have to do.”

What they need to do is turn to the sixth-placed Hatters, who can move into the top four with a win. Wrexham will move closer to Wycombe’s lead if they come top.

In total, only 12 goals were scored in Wrexham’s seven away matches; six were against the Red Dragons and six were against the Red Dragon.

Even though they are without goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo with a broken ankle, no team has had a better defensive performance on this trip.

Parkinson’s side are unbeaten in five matches and have 15 points from their last eight matches, while County have just two wins in seven matches. In their last two home games they lost 5-0 to Wycombe and beat Bolton by the same scoreline; Coincidentally, this score also held true when Wrexham last visited the Hatters in September 2023.
