Jury finds Lenexa businessman guilty of federal loan fraud

LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) – A federal jury found a Lenexa businessman guilty of providing false information on loan applications to the Small Business Administration.

Court documents filed in federal court say Scott W. Anderson, 53, of Lenexa, was convicted of four counts of making a false statement on a loan application, four counts of wire fraud and six counts of aggravated identity theft.

Anderson was a part owner of Riley Drive, a company that operated restaurants in Kansas and Iowa. In 2018 and 2019, he incorrectly answered “no” to questions about whether he or companies he controlled were involved in legal proceedings regarding loan applications from the SBA.

At the time, Riley Drive was a defendant in many civil lawsuits.

In March 2018, the SBA approved a $3.6 million loan to Riley Drive. A little more than a year later, in June 2019, the company defaulted, causing the SBA to incur a loss of approximately $2.2 million.

The SBA also approved a $700,000 loan in April 2019. When the company defaulted in June, it caused another loss for the SBA of $658,141.

The SBA continues to investigate the case, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
