Alabama fan rooting guide: Results to help with CFP rankings this week

Alabama football defeated LSU last week To not only survive in the CFP race, but also move up one spot in the rankings.

Crimson Tide moves up to 10th In the CFP committee’s final estimates last Tuesday.

So it seems clear that if Alabama wins, it should enter the CFP field. The Crimson Tide has three winnable games; It starts with Mercer on Saturday (1 p.m., SEC Network+/ESPN+), followed by Oklahoma on the road and Auburn at home. So barring anything unexpected, Alabama is in good position to make the top 12 team playoffs.

But there is a seeding to be played. If the season ended today, Alabama would travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to face the Indiana Hoosiers (10-0) in the first round of the playoffs. The Crimson Tide (7-2) would certainly prefer to host a home game at Bryant-Denny Stadium if they have to play in the first round. Advanced insemination will be required for this to happen.

So who can help Alabama make it happen?

For games the week of Nov. 16, here’s an Alabama fan’s rooting guide to the games and teams that could help the Crimson Tide in the CFP standings.

No. 2 Ohio State at Northwestern

Logistics: 11 a.m. on the Big Ten Network in Chicago, Illinois.

Coke: Northwest

Don’t hold your breath on this one, but let’s imagine Ohio State is two-loss (8-1). One of those losses to unranked Northwestern would definitely knock Ohio State out of the top five, if not the top 10.

No. 3 Texas in Arkansas

Logistics: 11 a.m. on ABC in Fayetteville, Arkansas

Coke: Arkansas

Can the battling Sam Pittmans upset another top-five team like he did in Tennessee? Maybe. Don’t count on it, but definitely root for it if you’re an Alabama fan. Texas (8-1) will have two losses, and an argument could be made that Alabama has a stronger resume. Maybe the committee still ranks Texas ahead of the Crimson Tide, but given that the Longhorns have no wins against ranked opponents and the Crimson Tide have four, only the “eye test” would put the Longhorns ahead of Alabama.

No. 4 Penn State at Purdue

Logistics: 2:30pm on CBS in West Lafayette, Indiana

Coke: Purdue

The Nittany Lions (8-1) have no wins against a ranked team like Texas so far this season. Add to that a loss to a bad Purdue team, and Penn State could very well fall outside the top 10. This of course benefits the Crimson Tide. But don’t count on this massive upset even if it happens in West Lafayette.

Virginia, No. 8 At Notre Dame

Logistics: 2:30pm on NBC in South Bend, Indiana

Coke: Virginia

A second loss for the Fighting Irish (8-1) would benefit the Crimson Tide. Right now, Notre Dame is just about ahead of Alabama. If the Crimson Tide has the same number of losses, Alabama will likely move ahead of the Fighting Irish.

No.23 Missouri, No.21 South Carolina

Logistics: 3:15 PM on SEC Network in Columbia, South Carolina

Coke: Missouri

It’s hard to say because whoever loses will likely fall out of the top 25, meaning Alabama is one less victory on its resume. But here’s the explanation for why the Missouri win helped the Crimson Tide more: Alabama dominated the Tigers and essentially shut them out. Meanwhile, Alabama barely beat South Carolina. As long as Missouri remains in the top 25, this will be a good win for the Crimson Tide considering how dominant they have been. The committee looks not only at what you win or lose, but also how you win or lose.

No.7 in Tennessee, No.12 in Georgia

Logistics: 18:30 on ABC in Athens, Georgia

Coke: Georgia

The committee may not rank Alabama ahead of Tennessee (8-1) if they have the same record, but that almost certainly won’t happen if the Vols have a better record than Alabama. Additionally, Georgia beating a top-10 team would move the Bulldogs up in the rankings and increase the value of Alabama’s victory on Sept. 28.

#1 Oregon in Wisconsin

Logistics: 6:30pm on NBC in Madison, Wisconsin

Coke: Wisconsin

Why not some chaos at the top? If the Badgers win, it will add a major victory to Wisconsin’s schedule. If that happens and we end the year with two winnable games against Nebraska and Minnesota, Wisconsin will finish 8-4. This would give Alabama a solid win on the schedule. Maybe even a win in the standings. Plus, with Alabama trying to improve its top-10 standing, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for the top team to lose.

BYU at No. 6 in Kansas

Logistics: 9:15 PM on ESPN in Provo, Utah

Coke: in kansas

Another matchup and loss could benefit the Crimson Tide as BYU (9-0) falls into the category of a team ranked ahead of Alabama.
