Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine sentenced to more than a month in prison for probation violations

NEW YORK — Rapper Daniel Hernandez, known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, was sentenced to a month and a half in prison on Tuesday. Various violations of supervised release.

The sentence is slightly higher than federal prosecutors sought.

“Your breach of the trust of the court is very serious,” said Judge Paul Engelmayer.

Hernandez pleaded guilty to five violations, including unauthorized travel to Las Vegas and Sarasota, Florida, two counts of failing to comply with a drug test and testing positive for methamphetamine.

“Five violations tells me that you believe the rules do not apply to you,” Engelmayer said. “Maybe you believe it because you’re a famous rapper, Tekashi 6×9”

Hernandez accepted responsibility for the violations but asked the judge for leniency.

“I don’t want to go back to the penalty box,” Hernandez told the judge.

In 2020, Engelmayer ordered Hernandez’s early release from prison following a 2018 plea deal for his involvement in a violent street gang.

Tekashi was indicted in November 2018 on federal racketeering and murder conspiracy charges as part of his involvement with the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. Prosecutors claimed the gang “wreaked havoc on New York City” by “engaging in brazen acts of violence.”

Tekashi pleaded guilty and agreed to attack his gang in exchange for leniency.
