Police Say Oregon Mother Woke Up from Sleep to Find Her Missing 5-Year-Old Child

Authorities in Oregon say a mother woke up from a weekend nap to find her 5-year-old son had disappeared.

Joshua James McCoy, who has autism, was last seen Saturday, Nov. 9, at his home on Stage Road in Hauser. Coos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

The sheriff’s office said the boy’s mother took a nap around 1 p.m. local time and woke up around 5:30 p.m. to find Joshua missing.

Authorities announced that “some clues were found” early in the search for Joshua, but noted that “nothing definitive” had been found.

“Nothing is being ruled out at this time as we are evaluating all possible avenues,” CCSO said in a statement on Monday, Nov. 11. “We remain hopeful that Joshua will be found alive and well.”

According to the missing persons bulletin, Joshua is said to be approximately 3 feet 6 inches tall and weigh between 50 and 60 lbs. He has brown, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.

The boy is said to respond to “Josh” or “Joshie,” but “may not respond when called.”

CORSAR, a search and rescue effort between seven counties in Oregon and California, is assisting in the search for Joshua and providing 61 ground personnel as well as air support and K-9 resources, according to the department.

The sheriff’s office “has also requested assistance from State and Federal agencies” and expects additional resources to arrive on Tuesday, November 12.

“Almost always the person is within 1,000 feet of the last known location, and we’re already well beyond the 1,000-foot mark,” Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio said. CBS affiliate KPIC.

Authorities are asking civilians not to attempt to search the area on their own for Joshua at this time.

“The concern is that evidence may be missed or tainted due to the large number of personnel at the scene,” the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
