Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a woman in Savar’s Birulia.

According to Prothom Alo, police claimed that husband Nayan Mia killed his wife Santona Begum, dismembered her hands and head due to a family fight two days ago, and dumped her body in a nursery.

The body of 36-year-old Shantana Begum, an RMG employee, was found in a nursery in Dattapara around 11 pm on Monday.

A press conference was held at Savar Model Police Station yesterday afternoon to explain the details of the murder.

Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Kabir said that after receiving information from locals that a woman’s body was found at Setu Nursing Home, police found the body on Monday morning. The severed head and two hands were found wrapped in polythene not far from the nursery.

Locals later determined that it belonged to Santona.

The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said.

He added that the investigation is continuing to obtain more detailed information about the incident.

Earlier yesterday, a group of Dhaka University students demanded justice for Santona.

During the protests, Nuziya Hasin Rasha, a student at the Department of Linguistics at Dhaka University, said, “Everyone knows that a body was found near Nargis University yesterday. Rejecting the government for failing to protect women, he added: “We have not seen any prosecution for extrajudicial killings under this government. If such extrajudicial killings continue, the farmers, workers and working people of this country will no longer support you.”

Retired professor of medicine from Limulla Medical College, Dr. Harun-or-Rashid said at the protests: “A naked woman’s body was found with her head cut off and her hands cut off. This became headline news in many media outlets. … I want to warn this government; if women stand up, no one will be able to stand in front of them.”
