David GuettaThe directorial remix of “A Bar Song” was also nominated for best remixed recording, but that category only honors the remixer, not the artist behind the original track.

More from Billboard

Throughout 2024, Shaboozey has soared to astonishing heights with his Americana-tinged, hip-hop inspired take on outlaw country. He became the first Black male artist to top the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts simultaneously with “A Bar Song.” The cheekily intrusive “A Bar Song” J-Kwon‘s 2004 single “Tipsy” spent 16 weeks at the top of the Hot 100, tied for only three weeks Lil Nas And Billy Ray Cyrus‘Old Town Road’ is the longest-running Hot 100 chart-topper of all time. In addition to “A Bar Song,” Shaboozey scored two more 2024 Hot 100 hits with Beyoncé: “Spaghettii” (with Linda Martell at No. 31) and “Sweet * Honey * Buckiin'” (No. 61). In its early years of release, “A Bar Song” propelled Queen Bey’s “Texas Hold ’Em” to the top of Hot Country Songs, making the collaborators the first Black artists to have back-to-back No. 1 hits in the chart’s nearly 70-year history.

With a slew of Grammy nominations to cap off a life-changing year, Shaboozey, currently based in Lexington, Ky., is here to help. Jelly Roll On the Beautifully Broken tour – took a few minutes to talk billboard He talks about his latest awards, how he celebrated, and how it all affected his approach to making music.

Where were you when you first saw the nominations?

I was on the tour bus. I’m currently on the road with Jelly Roll. I was supposed to play basketball with him, but I think he was sleeping on another bus.

Who did you call first?

I probably FaceTimed Mike Trotter Jr. War and Treaty) because he texted me first. He was congratulating me as a friend and mentor, always the best. Then I called my manager. I tried to call Jelly, but like I said, I think he was asleep. Then I called my mother and brother. And then my other manager Abas (Pauti). And later Teddy Swims He called me! He was crying. I definitely think he’s underrated (for more nominations). He has one of the most amazing voices; A very classic, timeless sound. Honestly, if it had been nominated (more), it would have been the “Teddy Swims Appreciation Show”! (laughing).

What do you normally do to celebrate with your family and friends?

The last time I went home was probably in March, a few days ago. Cowboy Carter output. It’s funny ’cause I was there too Tommy Richman‘s birthday party. (Cowboy Carter) there wasn’t even an announcement and I was just hanging out. I didn’t actually have the opportunity to slow down and celebrate. My mom’s birthday is coming up early next year, so we’ll probably have a big birthday party for her.

Were there any surprises for you when you looked at the nominations?

I wanted to say, the Beatles AI song. “Okay… are we doing this?” I asked. (laughing) I thought it would be a great thing to capture (record of the year), but I’m so grateful for the six albums I got. And that’s not even counting the ones we’ve had our names attached to, like Beyoncé’s (Cowboy Carter) record. Honestly, this is a big year for both of us.

You were nominated for general, country, and rap; What does it mean to see your name and work welcomed across genres?

It’s definitely bittersweet. There is a tremendous amount of talent in the country space and so many well-written songs that I felt like I deserved that look, too. Country music is not looking for talent. The nice thing about country music – especially some people who have been doing it this long – is that there can be so many people in this category. I heard a song Sam Barber And AveryAnna this is very nice, Zach Bryan Zach Top also released a great album. I wish there was a way to showcase everyone, but that’s the nature of award shows.

You and Beyoncé are now one step closer to the potential of becoming the fifth and sixth Black artists to win a country Grammy. How do you start to give a fuck about this?

It’s so crazy, especially to do this with an established artist like Beyoncé. It feels like I’m on the right track to do the same. I can finally cross this off my bucket list. I can say I’m a Grammy nominee for the rest of my life. I truly believe this is just the beginning.

I learned so much from just doing the tour and doing these shows. Now with more resources from the label I feel like I can really show up and start making music without pressure. A lot of people work to get the #1 song. Because I’ve been able to achieve this at this point in my career, I can start focusing on making the music that really matters to me. I’m not saying the music I make isn’t important, but I can really get into my artist bag. It will be really fun.

What does this look like for you as you dig deeper into this “artist bag”?

With more collaboration, the phonebook gets a little bigger with the writers, producers, and session players you can work with. And the time you can spare. My entire project was recorded mostly in the producers’ rooms. Some of it was done in Nashville, but most of it was done at my producer’s house in Van Nuys (California) – not a pretty country scene! Due to budget constraints, we didn’t want to do something that would line our pockets. Now I have the opportunity to be like, “Do I want to go to Montana for a few weeks? Or Nashville? Or Electric Woman?” These seem more likely, whereas before it was just a dream or an afterthought.

Have you had a chance to talk to the co-writers and co-producers of “Tipsy”?

I talk to them every day. Sean Cook, one of my new producers, produced most of the songs on my last project. Cowboys Live Foreverand Nevin (Sastry) had done most of the work on the previous film, Miss Brawler. They were the two producers on “A Bar Song,” so it was great to be able to connect one of my oldest friends with one of my new collaborators, and they hit it off really well. We achieved this all together. They both believe in me, see beyond the immediate gain and exposure, stay loyal and put in the hours – and I’m really meticulous, so I’m extremely fine-tuning. In my opinion, albums will continue to be delivered for a while after the due date (I continue to work on them). Sometimes producers may experience producer fatigue, but in those moments we made “A Bar Song”.

I hope people learn from this. Don’t stop being creative, don’t stop believing in your ideas, and surround yourself with people who will help and encourage you to explore your ideas and not kill them.

“A Bar Song” is two weeks away from breaking the all-time record for most weeks on the Hot 100 chart. Do you strive for that, or do you just let the song do what it does?

It’s such a crazy thing that the song carries on its own. We don’t do anything and it’s like, “Hey, you’re aiming for week 17 now!” (laughing) Some people will do a few different remixes, or they’ll do instrumentals and a cappella and all these different versions. We initially reached out to a lot of people trying to remix but couldn’t find anything meaningful. It’s crazy that “A Bar Song” is still doing what it’s doing.

Other than “A Bar Song,” which song would you most like to see played on the Grammy broadcast?

There is the “Good News” album that we are promoting; It would be great to perform at the Grammys; Especially if it performs as expected and really resonates with people. But everyone wants to get drunk right now! I was asked to go to the World Series and I had just committed to the Boston Celtics. We also do CMA. We’ve been telling people that we want to showcase and highlight other songs as well, and everyone has been very understanding.

What do these Grammy nominations mean for Shaboozey, who moved to Los Angeles a decade ago to pursue music?

This is really great. A dream came true. The Grammys are the pinnacle of music. It’s something watched from the outside. There are songs about the Grammys, people talk about them all the time. I’m pretty sure I’ve been talking about going to the Grammys or winning a Grammy since I was 17. It’s a blessing to now have something else ticked off my to-do list. The most exciting part of all this is being able to listen to your music and say: “Damn, I’m not setting boundaries anymore. I actually received the Grammy I mentioned in the song I made in 2014! Manifestation my friend. Now I can really talk!

It’s good to see there’s still hope for new artists. We see these names every year in most of the nominated artists. It’s great to have new names. I want to make sure this isn’t the last time my name is mentioned there.

How many photos are you taking to celebrate these nominations?

Oh man, we’ll see! When I see Jelly Roll tonight, it’ll all be love. We’re going to go out there and have a great time. I take photos every day now, this whole tour was one big party.
