HADDON TWP. — A man fatally shot by a Haddon Township police officer has been identified as a Pennsauken resident.

Keith Edelin, 46, was shot by Haddon County Officer Luke Falkenberg during a confrontation in an apartment building stairwell early on Nov. 3, according to the state attorney’s office. Edelin was allegedly armed with a knife when he confronted Falkenberg and his partner shortly after 1 a.m.

The attorney general said officers responded to a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress at a building in the 300 block of Crystal Lake Boulevard.

“During an interaction in the stairwell, Officer Falkenberg fired his service weapon and attacked Mr. Edelin,” he said.

Officers provided medical aid until Edelin was taken to an area hospital, where he died about an hour later, the statement said.

A knife was seized at the scene. Falkenberg and his partner were not injured.

The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office did not provide any further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

A state law requires an investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacity.
