Harris says ‘victory goes through Philly’ as she courts Black and Latino voters in Pennsylvania – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — Vice President Kamala Harris said Sunday that the road to the White House runs through Philadelphia, with several stops across the city that will determine her fate in Pennsylvania and with it the race to reach 270 delegate votes.

Harris was joined by Mayor Cherelle Parker during an afternoon visit to Hakim’s Bookstore & Gift Shop, a black-owned business in West Philadelphia. He expressed confidence while speaking to a voter there.

“We’re going to do this,” Harris said. “Victory goes through Philly and it goes through Pennsylvania.”

During the day, the vice president also attended a church service at a predominantly Black church, stopped at a barbershop and stopped by a Puerto Rican restaurant — all part of a concerted effort to woo Black and Latino voters.

The Commonwealth, along with Michigan and Wisconsin, is at the base of the Democrats’ “blue wall”; He notes that Donald Trump swept in 2016 before Joe Biden did the same four years ago. In addition to visiting local businesses, Harris also visited a youth basketball team and released a new campaign ad.

The ad, which aired during the Eagles football game on Sunday, included a clip of Trump in 2020 and said, “Bad things are happening in Philadelphia.”

“They don’t like us,” a narrator interjects. “We don’t care.”

The ad, which went viral shortly after it was released and paid special tribute to the notoriously hostile sports fans who pitted Trump against the city, served as a warning to the former president.

“What people like Donald Trump don’t understand is: We are Philly. “I fuck Philly,” the narrator says. “And when you fight us, we fight back. 1776 to 4 and 26. So go ahead, talk whatever you want, Donald. “We will vote soon.”

Harris’ message, appearing in several vote-rich districts on Sunday, was simple and consistent.

“The election is here, and the choice is truly in your hands,” Harris said during another event. “The path to victory goes through all of you, all of the leaders here.”

He also talked about the campaign’s effort to build a broad coalition. In some cases, that meant embracing conservative Republicans like former Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming. In Philadelphia, that means convincing a city that is overwhelmingly Democratic but racially, culturally and economically diverse to support him nearly as much.

“I say to all my friends here, let’s be conscious about building community. Let’s be intentional about building coalitions,” Harris said. “Let’s be intentional about understanding that we all have much more in common than what divides us.”

Harris also appealed directly to young voters; This is another demographic group that could be crucial in determining a race that shapes us by coin flips, both nationally and in major battleground states.

“You are rightfully impatient for change,” Harris said. “You, who alone know about the climate crisis, are leaders in what we must do to protect our planet. “Those of you who grew up with active shooter drills know what we have to do to fight for safety in our schools.”

She went on to reiterate the impact the election will have on the future of reproductive rights in America.

But shortly after taking the stage at an event in Philadelphia, Harris was interrupted by a pro-Palestinian protester and, as she had previously, briefly interrupted her remarks to acknowledge the ongoing Israeli war in Gaza.

“We can, and we must seize this opportunity to end this war and bring the hostages home,” Harris said. “And I will do everything I can to achieve that goal.”
