World War I memorials listed ahead of Remembrance Day

The Bishop of Ely has dedicated a war memorial at Little Downham, near Ely, in memory of the 32 men and eight others who gave their lives in the Second World War.

Historic England said the Northchurch War Memorial, near Berkhamsted, stands in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church as a lasting testament to the sacrifices made by the 46 local men who lost their lives in the First World War and 13 others in the subsequent conflict.

The monument on Hertford Heath, near Hertford, was reportedly unveiled in 1920 after villagers gathered at the church and marched towards the decorated Celtic cross with the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment band.

The monuments were given listed status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of Historic England.
