Percy Thrower’s old greenhouse finds new use

The greenhouse, owned by gardener and broadcaster Percy Thrower, has officially reopened as the home of the Men’s Sheds Association in Shrewsbury.

The group, which operates across the country, supports men experiencing loneliness or mental health issues, and members have spent the last five years moving the greenhouse to its new home.

It was formerly located at The Quarry park in Shrewsbury and has been rebuilt at the West Midlands Showground.

Margaret Thrower said her father would be “very proud and very excited” to see the greenhouse find a new use.

He was asked to officially open it and said it was great to see the ruined structure being rebuilt.

“He was great at passing on knowledge, and it’s definitely a great way for people to learn and pass on the knowledge they’ve acquired over the years,” he added.

Simon Rouse, of Shrewbury’s Men’s Shed, said: “There is a bit of a crisis in men’s health.

“Men need support, the companionship of other men, challenge, distraction and a reminder that life is not over and they still have a lot to offer.”

Members of the group, such as Phil Bibby, helped move and rebuild the greenhouse.

The former engineer joined in 2020 and said the greenhouse was “like tool heaven for me.”

It is equipped with a variety of wood and metalworking tools, as well as a food preparation area and a forge.

Mr Bibby described it as “a pretty special place” and added that the band had come a long way in the last four years.

Shrewsbury Men’s Shed has been shortlisted for the UK Men’s Shed of the Year award and the winner is expected to be announced in the Speaker’s Chamber of the House of Commons next Tuesday.
