Tenants ordered to vacate Sweetwater mobile home by May due to development plans – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

FRESHWATER, FLA. (WSVN) – Hundreds of mobile home owners are sharing their frustrations and demanding answers after learning they were forced out of their homes in less than a year.

Eviction notices have arrived for residents of Li’l Abner Mobile Home Park, located off 112th Street, with the holiday season just around the corner.

Tenants received letters Wednesday saying they had to vacate their homes by May 2025, in part because of the mobile home park’s closure.

In response, many people lined the streets in the area to protest the issue.

“It sucks. It’s so sad, what can I say it’s something we know will happen eventually but not this soon,” one tenant said in Spanish. “I have lived here for 30 years, it is as if there is no humanity because the elderly, young children, people who lack resources live here.”

It appears that the closure of the park is part of a larger development plan.

“This is a big business for people who just want money from people who are going to get rich,” said a man speaking Spanish.

Affordable apartment buildings have recently opened in the area.

Now developers hope to continue building more workforce housing and schools.

The 900 mobile homes that make up the community house more than 1,000 residents, many of whom are elderly or young families.

Although many tenants own mobile homes, the majority are too old to move elsewhere, so they will need to be demolished so developers can level the land and begin construction.

While the park owner has offered an incentive package that goes beyond what Florida law requires, many residents are still struggling with the thought of losing their homes and the memories they made while living there.

Tenants must continue paying rent on the property until May 19, 2025, the eviction date.
