Truro City enjoying ‘extraordinary’ homecoming says boss John Askey

Truro City manager John Askey said the club’s recent form had been “remarkable”.

The Tinners sit second in the National League South and continue their seven-match unbeaten run after a 1-1 draw with Chippenham Town on Tuesday.

More than 2,800 people were at the new Truro City Stadium for the match; This was a record attendance since its opening in August.

“You couldn’t ask for more than the performances the players gave,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

“We have a very, very limited squad, limited resources and what is going on at the football club is remarkable.

“You can see from the pitch how the city is behind us and that showed with 2,800 people playing Champions League football on Tuesday night.”

Bad weather conditions at their temporary grounds forced Truro to play 13 matches in the last 28 days of last season and they finished the season in 16th place.

They lost manager Paul Wotton to rivals Torquay United over the summer and sold their old ground, finally returning to Cornwall after the best part of four years.

They replaced Wotton with Askey, who had previously led York City to promotion from the northern version of the sixth tier and also had charge of Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Macclesfield Town in the English Football League.

He has apparently led a team to the highest position they have ever been in the English football pyramid.

“I think everyone can see there is something going on at the football club,” Askey added.

“We want to push this club as much as we can, our ultimate goal is of course to try to play league football.

“We’re going to need a lot of resources to do this, but that’s the goal.

“Hopefully we can attract investment and if we do that the club only goes in one direction and that’s forward.

“So we’re trying to improve the structure, but it’s very important to have everyone behind us, all of Cornwall, because it would be great if we could get something done this season.”
