Chief investigator Det. Jason Fillyaw said there was a financial reason.

Hamlett was captured on the side of the road in Chapin, South Carolina, and taken to a local hospital after evading law enforcement for weeks.

The Good Samaritan didn’t know who he was. Hospital staff recognized him and called the police.

“It reminded me of the movie Catch Me If You Cansaid Fillyaw. “So you know what I mean? “It seemed like everywhere you turned something new would pop up and we were left scratching our heads.”

He added that they are 90% sure they have identified everyone involved but are continuing to investigate other leads.

Authorities believed he had been using someone else’s identity for several years.
