Drivers urged to ‘be careful’ when choosing shoes or risk £100 fine

Drivers in two major parts of the country have been urged to carefully consider a piece of clothing before getting behind the wheel in the coming days to avoid serious fines.

With the Met Office predicting snowfall in parts of Scotland and northern England in the coming days, many Brits are thinking of putting on something warm before leaving the house.

But the shoe retailer shoe zone warned drivers that their winter shoes should not limit their ability to reach the pedals correctly.

They explained: “Drivers need to be particularly careful as cold, wet and snowy weather is forecast, and not just because of the roads.

“Riders should ensure that the soles of their replacement shoes are no thicker than 10mm and have enough grip to not slip off the pedals.”

While the majority of drivers want to focus on keeping their feet warm on cold days, the shoes they choose need to allow them to operate the pedals in their car safely and securely.

This means the sole is no thicker than 10mm, allowing them to easily feel each pedal, while also being light enough that riders can easily move their ankles to avoid harsh acceleration and braking.

Drivers who wear a pair of shoes deemed to be inappropriate could be charged with ‘driving without due care and attention’ and could be fined £100 on the spot and three points on their licence.

To help drivers avoid fines, Shoezone recommended that drivers carry a second pair of shoes in their vehicles at all times, giving them full control.

They advised: “We recommend drivers always keep a spare pair of driving shoes in their car so the weather never catches them unawares.

“This means a pair of dry shoes should always be kept in the vehicle during the late autumn and winter months.”

Similarly, drivers who plan to hit the roads when it snows should not forget to take a spare pair of warm clothes with them so that they can be comfortable in case of an accident or breakdown.

Like their shoes, the clothing items drivers choose should give them plenty of control over the vehicle to avoid further accidents and penalties.

It’s a good idea for cold-weather travel to pack other items along with spare batteries, such as a flashlight, jumper cables to start the vehicle with a worn battery, and nonperishable snacks.
