An inside look at the new camp used by Singapore Armed Forces troops training in Australia

SHOALWATER BAY, Queensland: A new camp for Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) troops has been established at an expanded training area in Australia.

Known as Camp Tilpal, it can accommodate 2,000 people, compared to 1,000 at nearby camps such as Camp Growl at Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland.

In addition to the SAF, the camp can also be used by the Australian Defense Force (ADF) and other troops invited by the Australian military.

The camp already houses soldiers taking part in this year’s Exercise Wallaby, the SAF’s largest overseas exercise.

Following the expansion, Shoalwater Bay Training Area is now five times the size of Singapore.

At a ceremony to commemorate the completed expansion on Wednesday (Nov 13), Singapore’s Minister of State for Defense Heng Chee How said it was “another historic milestone” for both Singapore and Australia’s defense establishments.

“This is a tangible symbol of the enduring trust between us and elevates the bilateral defense relationship as we look forward to commemorating the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations next year,” he added.
