City of Amarillo inspects water lines to meet federal lead exposure regulations

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The City of Amarillo announced Thursday that it will inspect service lines connected to the city water system to comply with federal regulations.

The city says assessments will be conducted to comply with Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) to reduce the risk of exposure to possible sources of lead in the city’s drinking water.

Notifications will be sent to homes on Friday. According to a news release, notifications will include information about waterline categories:

The city says water lines that existed before the Lead Ban on January 1, 1989, and have not yet been inspected on site, would fall into the “Unknown” category.

The city says all “Unknown” water lines will be inspected by October 2027.

The city says there will be no impact on water quality or water supply.

“A nationwide requirement, LCRI will help ensure that all water lines connected to the City of Amarillo water system meet or exceed federal safety requirements. “To meet this federal requirement, all City of Amarillo water lines will be inspected on-site,” said Deputy City Manager Floyd Hartman.
