An inmate at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail died by suicide Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release Thursday.

The man was booked into jail on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and was being held on $75,000 bail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing a peace officer without regard for the safety of others, and driving under the influence of drugs. The prisoner was placed in a single-person observation cell within the Prisoner Reception Center. Around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, detention officers found them unresponsive with a restraint around their necks. Jail staff and Wellpath medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, which were continued by paramedics from County Fire and AMR, but the inmate was pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes later.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that although the death appeared to be a suicide, it “conducted a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident” and that the Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct further investigation to determine the cause and manner of this death.

The identity of the deceased will be announced after the relatives are notified.
