Department of Homeland Security releases framework for using artificial intelligence in critical infrastructure

washington – The Biden administration on Thursday issued guidelines for using artificial intelligence in the power grid, water system, air travel network and other pieces of critical infrastructure.

The private sector will be required to adopt and implement guidelines promulgated by the Department of Homeland Security and developed in consultation with the department’s advisors. Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board.

“We intend for the framework, frankly, to be a living document and to change as developments in the industry change,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters.

The framework recommends that AI developers evaluate potentially dangerous capabilities in their products, ensure their products align with “human-centered values” and protect users’ privacy. Cloud computing infrastructure will need to vet hardware and software vendors and maintain the physical security of data centers.

Owners and operators of critical infrastructure are advised to have stronger cybersecurity protocols in place that take into account AI-related risks and provide transparency about how AI is used. There are also guidelines for state and local governments.

Asked whether the framework would change after President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in in January, Mayorkas emphasized that he is implementing the policies of President Joe Biden’s administration.

“The president-elect will decide what policies will be issued and implemented,” Mayorkas said. “And that, of course, is the president-elect’s prerogative.”
