‘I looked outside and saw flames’: Neighbor gives heartbreaking account of Greek house explosion

Neighbor gives harrowing account of house explosion in Greece

GREECE, NY — Just before 5 a.m. Monday, the house on Stone Road blew up. Miraculously, the 3 people inside managed to escape.

On Tuesday, News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke returned to the scene to get the latest on the investigation.

There wasn’t much left of the house that once stood there. Most of the huge piles of debris were removed from the basement, where most of the house had collapsed.

Tom Corsi lives next door, the explosion woke him up and the wind blew intense flames into his home.

“I jumped out of bed, my side of the bed was facing the window, I looked out and saw flames and I told my wife, fire is fire, the house next door is on fire, I think ours is on fire too, the air conditioner was on, Corsi said the veranda was burned in the fire.

When they ran outside, they saw the man, the woman, and their adult daughter getting themselves out.

“I don’t know how they got out, I heard his wife, I think someone offered to put on shoes, but I think she said that her feet and soles were burning and that she saw her daughter in the middle of the road.” “Tom isn’t sure if there were any burns or injuries,” he said.

Barnard Fire District arrived on scene within minutes.

“They were chatty enough to tell us there were three of us and they were able to do a quick check and realize the three victims were outside, we will still be doing a search around the building and for us, Lieutenant Dave Carstairs with the Barnard Fire District said, “We’ll make sure it’s safe to go in or not.” “We have to be because at the end of the day, we have to make sure our responders are safe,” he said.

All three are expected to survive, although the mother is in protective custody.

Jennifer spoke with first responders about some of the challenges they faced at this scene.

“There were wires on the roads yesterday and this made us think a little more. I can’t let companies come from this side of Stone Road because of the electrical wires, and if RG&E doesn’t get on scene immediately, those wires are always considered live, so I’m worried about my crew, I’m worried about the people. I’m worried about throwing some water on that fire for whoever is home because the quicker we can put the fire out, the quicker we can search and try to figure out what’s going on,” Carstairs said.

The fire department did not need to wait for an ambulance to help the victims because each rig has a paramedic.

“It’s nice to have paramedics on scene as well, so if there are too many injuries for the emergency department to handle, we have the ability to have paramedics start IVs, heart monitoring, things like that,” Carstairs said. in question.

RG&E was on scene all day and into the night Monday. The news service told News10NBC it was working with the Monroe County Fire Marshal’s Office to determine what caused the explosion.

No matter how long the rebuilding takes, most people in this neighborhood are thankful that the family living here survived, considering how violent and powerful the explosion was.

As of 5:30 Tuesday night, the girl was under guard at Strong Memorial Hospital and the man and woman were in stable condition.
