Evacuations continue as wind-driven wildfire burns on Callahan Road in South Reno

A rapidly spreading brush fire in South Reno forced the evacuation of some nearby residents and led to the Mt. Rose Highway closed.

The fire broke out just before 10:15 a.m. on Nov. 11 near Callahan Road.

Evacuations are ongoing for residents in the following areas (shaded in red):

  • Mt. Rose Highway and Callahan Road
  • Salmon River Court
  • Napoleon Driving
  • La Briana Boulevard
  • Tannerwood Drive
  • wild forest driving
  • Goldenrod Road
  • Castle Boulevard
  • light brown stripe
  • Sorrel Road
  • Carl Driver
  • Paris Court
  • Cherry Tree Driver

The county is asking residents to leave the area immediately and an evacuation center has been set up at the South Valleys Library. All large animals can be taken to the Reno Sparks Livestock Event Center.

Mt. The Rose Highway is currently closed to all traffic in both directions between Wedge Parkway and Douglas Fir Drive.

Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue says the fire was wind-driven and moving at a high rate of speed. Strong winds are expected for the rest of the day, with sustained winds gusting to 23 mph in Reno, with tail gusts approaching 40 mph.

Governor Joe Lombardo said on social media shortly after the fire broke out: “My office and Nevada Emergency Management are fully engaged in assessing and combating the ongoing wildfire near Callahan Ranch. Please pay attention to local authorities and follow evacuation advisories.”

Approximately 1,700 NV Energy customers in the 8911 zip code are currently without power due to the fire.

The Callahan Fire is causing air quality to reach unhealthy levels in the Reno area. You are asked to limit your outdoor activity.

The fire is burning in the same area as the Davis Fire.
