An inside look at the U.S. Navy’s uniform design and modernization efforts

As we honor our veterans today, CBS6 is sharing an exclusive look at what went into the U.S. Navy.

CBS6’s Emma Quinn traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, to head to the U.S. Navy base.

It takes a look at Navy uniforms, what went into their design, and how the Navy is paving the way for the modernization of other branches.

If you’re looking for a new shirt or pair of pants, you’ll probably head to the mall.

If you’re in the Navy and want a new uniform, you go to Navy Exchange, a store designed for active duty members.

“The uniform is a great source of pride for the work we do, but it is also very important to make sure you are dressed appropriately for the occasion,” said Lieutenant Glen Field.

Long Island native and Lt. Glen Field showed us how to pack the sea bag that sailors use to keep their uniforms while on duty.

“We have navy blue work boots, dress shoes, PT equipment, cold weather clothing, navy blue work uniform, summer dress whites, winter blue dress, navy service uniform.”

Uniforms have a tradition dating back hundreds of years. The Navy was commissioned by the Department of Defense for a five-year uniform modernization program that explored how men’s and women’s bodies have changed since the 1980s.

“So not only does it have to be functional, it has to fit correctly, but it has to be safe,” said Commander Terry Gabriel, Deputy Commander of Navy Uniforms. “So comply with form and function, safety, on ships of course you all wear Tupac, which is the operational uniform for safety, fire and delay. In other words, what is important is the part down to the fibers.”

They are currently trying to replace women’s uniforms and they are currently the fastest growing demographic joining the military.

“We did a study on the west coast and east coast two years ago where we talked about 600 female Marines looking at what their bodies were like, how they were built, how they were structured, what made them look good and feel good in their uniform. So this is the first product we’re launching this year in our modernization initiative. Then we will move on to skirts, trousers and jackets,” said Commander Gabriel.

When it comes to packing the sea bag, Lieutenant Field says to start with the boots and the rest is like solving a puzzle to get it to fit.

“Okay, pull the straps, okay, you’re ready to go to sea.”
