SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS

Weather forecast from Thursday to Friday:

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday. Heavy snowfall will move in bands across Southern Colorado today. Periods of heavy snow and periods of lighter snow. The bands will contain snow rates of 1-2 inches per hour, causing significant problems with visibility and leaving roads slippery and snow-covered. I’m specifically focusing on our southern tier near Raton Mesa and Raton Pass…which may be impassable If you can avoid traveling from time to time today, you’ll save yourself a lot of stress.

Winter Storm Warnings are active for all of I-25 south and most of the Southeast Plains. Winter Weather Advisories are in place for E Otero and E Kiowa counties

In Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and especially the southern mountains, snow density will increase from south to north until the morning and will be at heavy rates throughout most of the day. Expect snow bands to be 1-2 inches per hour. The density of snow will vary throughout the day as bands rotate in your area; so don’t expect speeds of 2 inches per hour throughout the day. The exception is our southern mountains, which will continue to measure new snow accumulations at the feet through the end of Thursday.

There will be a brief break in action as low pivots take place in Albuquerque on Thursday night. The third and final set of strong mid-level energy will fly through the lows into southern Colorado on Friday morning. On Friday morning, the snow will thicken again. Snowfall rates of 1-2″/hour can be expected with updraft and moist and slightly warmer air, heavy wet snow will be difficult to shovel and will compress existing snow somewhat. We will also be looking for some flurries due to winds, especially snow like the Palmer Divide In places where precipitation will be a problem from time to time, winds will blow at 20-30 miles per hour.

The biggest joker of Friday’s snow will be surface temperatures. Temperatures will be a few degrees warmer on Friday with a slight influx of warm air. It’s a small difference, but it could be critical in predicting snow totals on Friday. That’s why I made the additional accumulation ranges a little wider than normal in our latest snow map. If temperatures are warmer your totals will be towards the lower end, if we stay around freezing your city totals will be near the upper end.

This much additional snow is expected in your city Thursday through Saturday

That's how much additional snow is expected in the Pikes Peak Region. Note that depending on snowband dynamics, totals over the Palmer Divide may be slightly higher if we get colder.

  • As of Tuesday evening, heavy snowfall began in Teller, El Paso. and there are some reports in Fremont Counties and Castle Rock. Snow is starting to accumulate on the roads.
