11 people arrested at drunk driving checkpoint in Fresno

The Fresno Police Department arrested 11 people on suspicion of driving under the influence at a DUI checkpoint in Fresno Saturday night.

The checkpoint took place at Shaw Boulevard and Shaw Lane from 9pm until 4am the next morning.

In addition to the 11 people arrested, 39 more drivers were referred to the courthouse for driving without a license or with a suspended or revoked license.

A total of 491 vehicles passed through the checkpoint during the operation.

The locations of DUI checkpoints are strategically selected based on reported driving-related crashes.

The main purpose of these checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the roads.

The next DUI enforcement operation is scheduled for November 16 as a DUI saturation patrol.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
