IN GOVERNMENT: Water quality at center of policy debate, legal challenges in Cayuga County

Lake Owasco Basin Management Council Executive Director Dr. Adam Effler attended the ceremony. Inside Government with Guy Cosentino This week to address growing concerns about harmful algal blooms and water quality issues affecting Lake Owasco and nearby water supplies. The discussion comes at a time of increased attention to water safety, with recent blooms being spotted for the first time in several lakes, including Owasco and Skaneateles.

Effler, who has led the Watershed Management Council for nearly six years, provided information regarding the impact of algal blooms that raise questions about the safety of drinking water in the City of Auburn. Tests earlier this fall showed the presence of neurotoxins in the water, but no bans were placed on drinking water and later tests came back clean.

During the interview, Effler detailed the Council’s ongoing efforts to monitor and manage the watershed to ensure the safety of residents who rely on Lake Owasco for drinking water. He also touched on Auburn’s legal dispute with New York State over stricter watershed regulations; This issue has sparked local demand for improved water quality protections.

The segment marks the first of two discussions on water quality from Cosentino, who will host City Councilman Terry Cuddy, a longtime water quality advocate, next Tuesday. Cuddy is expected to share perspectives on the state’s response and its impact on local water management efforts.
