GARDINER – Stanley Howard Eames, 83, died Tuesday, November 5, 2024. He was born on August 12, 1941, in Bingham, Maine, to Stanley Baker Eames and Clara Eileen Bowen, at the home of his great-aunt Laura Baker. and Geraldine Hanay, who lives on Preble Street.

He attended grammar school in Hallowell, Maine, and graduated from Hallowell High School in 1959. He then attended the University of Maine and graduated in 1965. It was here at UM that he met his beloved wife, Nancy Cleaves, of New York City and Bar. Port. They were communicating with nature when they said, “Maybe we should consider getting married.” Then he set the date. They married on June 18, 1966. She died of breast cancer in 1999.

Stan began working as a reporter for the Kennebec Journal in 1965. His salary was $80 a week. He worked there until 1978, then went to work as news editor, assistant managing editor, and managing editor at the Amsterdam Recorder in Amsterdam, NY, and left there in 1983 for the Albany Times Union in Albany, NY.

After his grandfather’s death, the family decided to return to Maine in 1988; here Stan returned to the Kennebec Journal and they bought a house in Hallowell, where they lived until Nancy’s death. Stan lived there for a few more years until his brother Peter moved to Maine and bought a house in Gardiner, and they lived together until he passed away.

Stan loved the Maine coast. Her absolute favorite spot was Pemaquid Point. However, if there was ocean nearby, he was a happy man. His next favorite place was Washington DC and the surrounding area.

He was predeceased by his wife, parents, grandparents, sisters Hope MacFarland, Elizabeth Caldwell and Christine Eames, sister-in-law Lynda and Linda MacFarland, brother Russell B. Eames and nephew Francis Santana.

He is survived by his daughter, Wendy M. Eames of Augusta, his son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Jamie Eames of Gorham; his adored granddaughter, Kristen R. Pietri of Waterville; great-grandson, Emmett MacKay Bumford; one sister, Kathrin M. Theberge and her husband Roger of Hallowell, one sister, Caroline Eames Brasler and her husband Kevin of Arlington, Virginia, brothers Peter C. Eames of Gardiner, Robert E. MacFarland and Michael L. of Farmingdale .MacFarland Chelsea; many nieces and nephews, including David V. Helfrich of Oldsmar, Fla.; and their beloved friend of “The Lobster and Lies” fame.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Stan’s visitation on Thursday, November 14, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Knowlton Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, November 15, at Knowlton Hewins Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ledgelawn Cemetery in Bar Harbor.
