Follow Purdue’s Exhibition Game Against Creighton in Real Time

After months of playing against itself, the Purdue men’s basketball team will face a real opponent. Coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers are in Omaha, Neb., to face Creighton in a charity exhibition game.

Purdue returns Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn from last year’s 34-5 squad. Myles Colvin, Camden Heide and Caleb Furst also returned. Center Will Berg is expected to get more minutes, and the Boilers also have a five-man recruiting class that will get its first test in live action: Daniel Jacobsen, Gicarri Harris, CJ Cox, Jack Benter and Raleigh Burgess.

21:58 — Creighton beat Purdue 93-87. Pop Isaacs finished the game with 24 points for Creighton. The Bluejays shot 60% from the field and attempted 13-of-28 three-pointers. Purdue was led by Braden Smith, who scored 31 points. Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 22 points and Fletcher Loyer scored 17 points.

21:56 — With Creighton leading 92-87, Purdue had the game’s only possession, but Braden Smith missed a 3-pointer and Trey Kaufman-Renn missed a shot after an offensive rebound.

21:51 — Freshman guard Gicarri Harris gets his first basket as a Boilermaker. Defensive intensity immediately following the chase results in a Creighton walk violation. Creighton still leads by 7 points.

Braden Smith’s turnover proved costly and the Bluejays took advantage at the other end, getting a bucket from Ty Davis. Creighton has a 90-81 lead at the last media timeout.

21:44 — Braden Smith knocked down another three-pointer in the final 6 minutes to give Purdue some life. After this basket, he scored 29 points and the score was 85-75 in Creighton’s favor.

21:38 — Creighton pulled away to take a 12-point lead into the under-8 break in the second half. The Bluejays made their last five shots to make it 81-69 with 7:31 left in the game.

21:37 — Myles Colvin made the field goal, becoming the seventh Boilermaker to score in tonight’s exhibition game.

21:26 — Jackson McAndrew’s three-pointer gave Creighton a 68-60 lead with 11:12 left in the second half. Purdue takes a timeout.

21:17 —Creighton retook the lead at the first media timeout of the second half, putting Purdue ahead 57-54. The trio of Trey Kaufman-Renn, Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer continue to do most of the heavy lifting on offense, scoring 47 of Purdue’s 54 points.

21:12 — He came out of the Purdue locker room swinging. The Boilermakers finished the half on an 8-2 run. Braden Smith’s three-pointer gave the Boilers a 51-50 lead over Creighton, taking the lead for the first time since early in the first half.

20:52 — Trailing by 11 points in the first half, Purdue trailed Creighton 48-43 at halftime. Trey Kaufman-Renn and Braden Smith each have 13 points for Purdue. The Bluejays were led by Pop Isaacs, who scored 14 points.

20:42 — After Creighton’s Pop Isaacs makes another three-pointer (4-for-4, 14 points), Purdue moves inside to Trey Kaufman-Renn, who makes an easy basket and gets fouled. Kaufman-Renn provided a strong post presence for the Boilers, totaling 12 points at the under-4 break.

20:40 — Creighton’s Pop Isaacs came on fire in the first half, making all three of his shots from three-point range. The last one came with 4:47 left in the first half and the Bluejays took a 42-31 lead over the Boilermakers.

20:27 — Creighton’s Fredrick King was able to get to the basket on back-to-back possessions and throw down a pair of dunks to help the Bluejays maintain their lead. He is 3/3 ahead of the field with 6 points.

20:23 — Creighton consistently made 3-pointers early in this contest. The Bluejays were 5 of 9 from distance and held a 25-15 advantage at the second media timeout.

20:20 — Purdue freshman CJ Cox steps in and makes an immediate impact, hitting a field goal; This is his first attempt at shooting as the Boilermaker.

20:17 — 7-foot center Daniel Jacobsen showed off his range by making his first shot in a Purdue uniform from behind the 3-point line.

20:12 – Purdue made its first substitution of the game, inserting freshman center Daniel Jacobsen and sophomores Myles Colvin and Camden Heide. The game reached the first media timeout and Creighton led 11-8.

20:09 – Braden Smith took a corner shot as time expired on the shot clock after a wild chase for the loose basketball. Initially, Smith’s shot counted, but upon review, officials determined that he did not release the shot in time.

20:06 — Purdue guard Braden Smith scored the first basket of the game, sinking a shot from the free throw line to give the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
