UConn football beats UAB 31-23 to secure first winning season in 14 years

(WFSB) – It’s a historic night for UConn football, which beat UAB on Saturday to secure its first winning season in 14 years.

The Huskies got off to a strong start, kicking a field goal after a 13-play drive and interfering with the Blazer domination of the contest for the second time.

However, three plays after the interception, UConn would fumble the ball and give the ball back to UAB.

The Blazers scored their first touchdown of the game in the second quarter with Junior Quarterback Jalen Kitna’s 35-yard strike to Freshman Wide Receiver Corri Milliner.

They would find the end zone again thanks to a 25-yard run by Sophomore Running back Lee Beebe Jr. UAB would enter the locker room at halftime with a 20-3 lead.

The Huskies finally scored a touchdown with 7:57 left in the 3rd quarter, with Freshman Running Back Durell Robinson kicking in from one yard out.

However, UConn would struggle to string together coherent drives, despite forcing another interception from Kitna late in the 3rd quarter.

That is, until the Blazers got within seven points when Senior Quarterback Joe Fagnano, replacing the injured Nick Evers, found Freshman Wide Receiver Shamar Porter for a six-yard touchdown.

From then on, the Huskies tightly controlled the game. The defense stepped up, forcing a fumble on the first play of UAB’s next drive, and they would capitalize to take the lead with a touchdown.

After a series of punts from both ends, Sophomore Running Back Cam Edwards extended his advantage by breaking in a massive 48-yard touchdown run. That made the score 31-23 for UConn.

The Blazers would mount a late surge, driving all the way down to the UConn 34-yard line. However, they failed to convert on 4th and 10, giving the Huskies their seventh win of the season.

UConn will look to ride the momentum of their third straight victory when they face ACC member Syracuse on the road in two weeks.

As for UAB, they will face fellow conference rival Memphis on the road next week.
