Zeigler and Lanier scored 19 points each to lead Tennessee, which ranked 12th, by beating Louisville 77-55.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Chaz Lanier and Zakai Zeigler each scored 19 points as 12th-seeded Tennessee held Louisville to 27% shooting in a 77-55 victory on Saturday.

Volunteers (2-0), playing with a 57% shooting rate, defeated the Cardinals 40-26 (28 on defense) in rebounds and 40-10 in the painted area in the first inter-school match since 2018.

Tennessee took a 10-0 lead after five minutes and by at least 20 points on several occasions, before pulling away for the final time early in the second half after Louisville (1-1) closed within 47-38.

Zeigler went 7/13 from the field, including 4/7 from beyond the arc. Lanier shot 7-of-15 and 3-of-6 from long range, while Tennessee made 10-of-19 (53%) on 3s.

Reyne Smith came off the bench and scored 18 points for the Cardinals, who shot 60/16 in the match. This included just 10 of 39 shots (26%) from beyond the arc.

takeaway

Tennessee: The Volunteers showed off their quickness and athleticism on both ends, driving hard to the rim on offense and closing down the lane on defense. Although they sometimes struggled to commit 20 turnovers, they could only reach 12 points thanks to the Cardinals’ mistakes.

Louisville: The Cardinals initially struggled to control the ball, but then began to take shots on the Vols’ defense. This caused them to shoot from long range, which often resulted in misses outside of the second half, when they closed by single digits.
