21-year-old man killed in Groton motorcycle crash

GROTON, CT (WFSB) – A 21-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle crash in Groton early Friday morning.

Town of Groton police identified the driver as Elijah W. Hummel of Groton.

According to police, they responded to the crash on Fort Hill Road around 12:45 a.m.

A police officer reported that a motorcycle crashed on the road and its operator, who was nearby, was seriously injured.

The officer immediately requested additional first responders and emergency medical services to the scene to assist.

The driver, later identified as Hummel, was transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Hummel was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon arrival at the scene.

Initial investigation into the crash showed Hummel was driving a 2024 Kawasaki ZX-400 and was traveling westbound on Fort Hill Road at a high rate of speed. Police said he lost control of his motorcycle and crossed the eastbound travel lane of Fort Hill Road, striking an unoccupied Jeep Cherokee parked in front of Midway Pizza.

Fort Hill Road between Depot and Southern roads was closed to traffic while the crash was investigated. It has since reopened.

Police said the investigation into the accident continues.
