Hong Kong to consider procuring flu vaccine for family doctors amid supply concerns: official

Hong Kong health authorities are considering introducing flu vaccines for family doctors in the vaccination program to ensure stability in private market supply, a senior official said.

Health Undersecretary Dr Libby Lee Ha-yun said on Friday that authorities were aware of supply concerns for private doctors in previous years. Hong Kong authorities have begun vaccination programs ahead of an expected surge in infections during the winter months.

“We know there is some instability in the supply of flu vaccines in the private market,” Lee told lawmakers.

“We are currently discussing whether our strategic purchasing office should take into account the amount needed by the private sector in the supply of flu vaccines.

“Hopefully next year the supply will be more stable.”

Hong Kong has two main flu vaccination plans. The Government Vaccination Program offers free doses in public clinics and hospitals to eligible groups such as children and people aged 50 and over, as well as outreach programs in aged care homes.
