Man accused of ‘randomly and unprovoked’ stabbing teenage girl at Dollar Tree store

A teenage girl was stabbed in the back Thursday at a store in Hyannis while standing next to her mother in what Barnstable police said was a “random and unprovoked” attack.

Nikolas Rescigno, 31, of Hyannis, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Barnstable District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, police said. He is also wanted for not appearing in court. He was charged in connection with a knife-related incident at the Cape Cod Mall in May, police said.

According to police, the girl and her mother were at the entrance of the Dollar Tree Store in Hyannis around 12:38 a.m. Thursday when Rescigno came up behind them and allegedly stabbed the girl.

“Rescigno approached the young woman from behind at the entrance of the store and, without warning, stabbed her in the lower back while she stood next to her mother,” police wrote in a statement posted on Facebook Thursday. “The victim did not know Rescigno and this attack appears to be random and unprovoked.”

Police said the girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told police that Rescigno “stayed at the scene in the foyer and stared at the victim, eventually dropping the knife at the request of a bystander.”

He was detained by police on Thursday.

Rescigno is on trial in Barnstable District Court on several charges dating back to 2013, according to court records. He has a history of mental illness and spent much of 2016 to 2018 in state mental health hospitals, records show.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
