Police arrested one of the three suspects in connection with the alleged gang rape of a young woman at Mahamaya Lake area in Chittagong’s Mirsrai upazila on Thursday afternoon (November 7).

Mirsarai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Quader said today (November 8) that efforts are on to nab the other two suspects.

According to police, the incident took place in the Mahamaya Ecological Park area, where the victim and her boyfriend from another district were visiting. The couple ventured into secluded areas of Mahamaya Lake, unaware that they were being followed.

Three young men from Durgapur in Mirsrai upazila allegedly followed them and filmed their activities from a distance. Police said the suspects at one point attacked the couple, restrained the boyfriend and then took turns raping the woman.

The traumatized couple reported the incident to the authorities at the lake’s ticket office, who then informed the police. Police quickly intervened and rescued the couple and took them to the police station for safety and further investigation.

“We received the young woman’s complaint regarding rape at Mahamaya Lake. Shortly after the incident, the motorcycle of the suspects was seized on Thursday afternoon and one of the suspects was arrested early today,” OC Quader said.

“Efforts are continuing to capture other suspects. We will share the details later,” he added.
