President-elect Donald Trump has achieved an unprecedented feat in two decades by turning Nevada, a state that has consistently voted for Democratic presidential candidates since George W. Bush’s victory in 2004, into red. A decisive victory on election night left many wondering how this happened.

Matthew Klein, an analyst for the Cook Political Report, attributed the change to a fundamental reshaping of party coalitions. Klein said national trends are also emerging in Nevada, with Trump making significant headway with Latino voters, who make up a significant portion of Nevada voters.

“This is the first time in history that we’re seeing Democrats do this badly against Latinos,” Klein said. “It looks like Harris will win them by a margin in the single digits, well below the margin Democrats won even as recently as 2016.”

Klein also noted gains among male and young voters, indicating A significant shift to the right in most districts compared to 2020. Harris has struggled to make up for these losses, especially with college-educated white women in the suburbs.

The results in Nevada have raised questions about the power of the infamous ‘Reid Machine’ and the credibility of the Kitchen Workers Union. Klein asked: “Is this really still working? Can the Culinary Workers Union really be trusted at this point? I don’t know. I think it certainly looks like they’re not as strong as they were in 2020, 2022.”

The Associated Press has not officially called the race in Nevada, but the president-elect was ahead by more than 60,000 votes as of Wednesday afternoon.
