COLERAIN TWP., Ohio — A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged after allegedly trying to start a fight that led to Northwest High School being placed on lockdown and pointing a gun at the same time, according to Colerain police.

The incident took place on October 30and Northwest High School announced it would close the next day, October 31, out of an abundance of caution. The school district said the lockdown occurred after “two unknown individuals off campus approached and confronted an NWHS student during dismissal. The two individuals fled the area. A gun was seized off campus after the incident.”

According to Colerain police on Monday, it was a gun found in a nearby neighborhood.

Police say a 15-year-old boy and another person tried to fight with a Northwest High School student. During the incident, police said the 15-year-old boy was “brandishing a firearm” before fleeing the area.

Police said the teen was not a Northwest High School student. He was arrested on Nov. 1 and is charged with aggravated menacing, receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and unlawful carrying or possession of a deadly weapon.

The 15-year-old was taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Court Youth Center; Police said the investigation into the second suspect involved is still ongoing.

Northwest Local School District said on social media on Oct. 30 that reports of suspicious persons in the area led to a full quarantine at Northwest High School. Pleasant Run Elementary School and Pleasant Run Middle School were also quarantined due to their proximity to Northwest High School.

Quarantines at Pleasant Run Elementary and Middle School were lifted around 3:10 p.m. While classes at Northwest High School were suspended for the day, the district said students who were on campus for after-school activities were taken into the building and placed under controlled control. dismissal took place.

In a letter to parents, Northwest High Principal Alex Shrewsberry said he understands that the quarantine has “caused great concern within our school community” and that we want to take every precaution possible to ensure our students and staff feel safe and supported when they return to school. “

“We understand that closing school tomorrow may be disruptive, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to our students and their families. However, we believe this precautionary measure is important to provide a supportive learning environment for our students. They will return on Friday, November 1, 2024,” Shrewsberry said.
