LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The suspect was caught and detained hours later Shooting in South Los Angeles Authorities said two police officers were injured in the incident.

Nija Hill was taken into custody around 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the intersection of East 92nd Street and South Central Avenue at 9 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

Police said Hill pistol-whipped the two victims in an alley adjacent to a laundromat located near the 9200 block of South Central Avenue.

Hill then entered the laundromat and threatened several more people, according to police. Police said the suspect then went outside and again threatened several vendors with a firearm.

The laundromat was emptied and video showed customers running in various directions, some carrying their clothes.

When officers arrived on scene, they saw Hill standing on the sidewalk outside the laundromat, and Hill immediately began running.

During the foot pursuit, the suspect opened fire and attacked both officers, LAPD said. Police set up a perimeter and called in the SWAT team.

According to police, Hill had attempted to carjack someone near 93rd Street and Clovis Boulevard at the time, but was unsuccessful.

A short time later, officers found Hill with a wound in his leg, hiding in a vehicle a few blocks from the scene.

He was sent to a hospital where his injury was treated and he was available for booking.

Two police officers who were slightly injured were treated at the hospital and then released on Saturday morning. Another person, possibly the victim of the robbery, suffered a forehead injury.

Police initially said a second suspect was at large but later retracted that statement.

According to police, a Glock Model 17, 9 mm, semi-automatic firearm and an empty magazine were found in a dumpster near 93rd Street and Clovis Boulevard.

Officers also found nine spent 9mm cartridges near where the officers were shot.

Police said the gun, magazine and cartridge cases were processed and recorded as evidence.

The investigation of the incident continues.
