Orlando police are investigating the motive after two people died in Halloween attacks in the crowded nightlife district. Here’s what we know – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — Orlando police are still searching for a motive in two shootings on Saturday. It caused the death of two people and the injury of eight people Thousands of people celebrated Halloween early Friday morning.

Police said they charged a 17-year-old man with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.

The Orlando Police Department emailed CNN on Saturday that the slain men were identified as Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr. He confirmed that it was (19). Police said the injured victims ranged in age from 18 to 39.

Two people arrived at Orlando Regional Medical Center late Friday morning in critical condition and were listed as stable, hospital spokeswoman Marlei Martinez told CNN. Additionally, a 26-year-old woman was crushed and taken to hospital as people around her fled.

Orlando police identified a 10th victim who was in stable condition after taking him to the hospital Friday morning.

This was the 27th mass shooting in Florida this year. According to the Gun Violence ArchiveWith over 400 people nationwide. CNN defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people, not including the shooter, were shot.

Referring to footage of the first shooting, Police Chief Eric Smith said the suspect opened fire in the first area before fleeing with the crowd. In the video, police appear to capture the suspect at a second location immediately after opening fire.

Smith said about 100 officers were working a detail in the area, which allowed for a quick response but did not deter the shooter.

“Regardless of his mentality, he was going to shoot no matter what,” Smith said. “He passed multiple officers. He didn’t really care.”

Authorities are confident the shooter acted alone, Smith said Friday afternoon, adding that the suspect did not cooperate or speak with authorities. The suspect was previously arrested in 2023 on a grand theft charge, Smith said.

Police are investigating whether the victims were random or known to the suspect. The video shows the moment police say the suspect walked past a victim and then turned and fired.

“Did he know her? Did he run into someone who for some reason was one of his enemies? It’s all part of the case,” Smith said.

The suspect was questioned Friday morning as police searched for a motive, Smith said. “This person threw away his life here. What for?” said Smith.

State’s Attorney Andrew Bain said authorities are considering whether to charge the suspect as an adult. “Obviously, because of the large number of victims and the brazen nature of the crime, there are a variety of aggravating factors that could fit into the matrix to charge him as an adult,” Bain said.

The attack was another example of gunfire disrupting ordinary American life, from parades to campus homecomings to a night out on the town.

Gunshots rang out from the scene in blocks Fatal shooting at Pulse nightclub The incident occurred on June 12, 2016, when a 29-year-old shooter killed 49 people. At least 53 people were injured and police shot and killed the attacker at the scene.

Here’s what we know so far about Friday’s murders and the investigation.

‘Everyone started running’ when gunshots were heard

Large crowds gathered for Halloween celebrations dispersed as shots were fired just after 1 a.m. Friday, security cameras at the scene showed.

Sofia Alcala, who works downtown, told the CNN affiliate: WKMG everyone heard the gunshots before they started “freaking out.”

“Everybody started running,” he said. “I saw a group of people enjoying Halloween… then shots were fired and everyone dispersed. “I heard a lot of girls calling and crying.”

Within minutes, shots were opened at a second location about a block away. “Shortly after shots were reported fired, a suspect who fired the shots was located and taken into custody in Washington and Orange,” Smith said. Police said a gun was seized at the scene.

Between 50,000 and 100,000 people were in the area to celebrate Halloween, “one of the busiest nights of the year,” Smith said.

However, this year, the measures used in previous years Screening people for weapons — including checkpoints and gun-sniffing dogs — during downtown Halloween celebrations isn’t possible because a 2023 state law allows most people to carry concealed weapons without a permit, Smith said.

“When the law changes, you can basically walk on public streets as long as you meet certain criteria,” he said.

Mayor Buddy Dyer said the change “makes it even easier for people to carry guns and bring guns downtown.”

Dyer imposed a state of emergency for businesses in Orlando’s downtown entertainment district. A curfew will be in place from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. until next Friday, police said.

“We want a fun and vibrant downtown, but lately we have seen brazen criminals willing to come downtown and shoot and kill innocent victims in front of our police officers,” Dyer said.

Police said they are investigating what resources to add to keep the downtown area, which is usually a popular gathering spot on the Saturday after Halloween, safe throughout the weekend.

Orlando District 5 Commissioner Shan Rose said some city officials are considering whether to close off a large portion of downtown and allow only one-stop access on weekends and during special events. WKMG.

“We are working with businesses and some downtown residents to explore options for moving to a full and coordinated entry access point,” Rose said.

‘The first thing I did was thank God I’m still here’

The Orlando-based college confirmed to students in an email shared with CNN on Friday that a University of Central Florida student was among the two people killed.

“Our hearts are heavy with pain as we mourn this tragic, senseless violence that left at least one student injured and may have affected many students who were out to celebrate Halloween and were in the vicinity of this incident,” the university said. The statement stated that it was the largest in Florida.

Anthony Berry, 20, was grazed by a bullet along his upper scalp, an injury that could have been more serious if it had been a centimeter lower, Orlando Health trauma surgeon Joseph Ibrahim said at a news conference Friday.

“The first thing I did after this incident was thank God I’m still here,” said Berry, who plans to go into nursing. Berry was walking with a friend when the shooting began.

Berry, who recalled seeing the suspected attacker make a quick movement with his hand, said he ducked before seeing a white light.

Berry said his head felt hot and he realized he was injured.

“I’m in ABB school, so I just had a trauma assessment. That’s why I had my shirt on… I held the wound, I knew it was bleeding profusely,” he said. He was later taken to hospital.
