Ayew’s last minute goal denied Ipswich their first win of the season

Jordan Ayew’s stoppage-time equalizer earned Leicester City a point after holding 10-man Ipswich Town to a 1-1 draw at Portman Road.

The home team took the field to get their first win of the season with Leif Davis’ magnificent volley in the 55th minute.

But they were forced to finish the final 13 minutes man-light after Kalvin Phillips was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Leicester took advantage of this advantage and substitute player Ayew came into the game in the 94th minute and guaranteed a share of the points.

Ipswich missed out on a chance to move out of the relegation zone and remain in 18th place on five points, five clear of Leicester in 15th.

How did the match develop?

Leicester carried the bigger threat early on, with Abdul Fatawu and Facundo Buonanotte bringing on Arijanet Muric; Conor Chaplin and Ben Johnson came close at the other end with Ipswich entering the competition.

The home side took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when Morsy’s crossfield ball was superbly converted by Davis from a tight angle.

Leicester looked for a response as head coach Steve Cooper watched from the stands as he served his one-match touchline ban, and Harry Winks’ long-range curling effort led to a smart reflex save from Muric.

Ipswich had to increase their concentration levels when Phillips was shown his second yellow card against Ricardo Pereira.

The home team survived two big scares as the clock ticked down. Buonanotte fired in Victor Kristiansen’s cross, while Cameron Burgess blocked substitute Ayew’s goal-bound shot on the line.

But they could not hold on as Ayew scored a superb one-two with Jamie Vardy to earn the visitors a point.

Ipswich’s wait continues

It looked like Ipswich could finally end the 22-and-a-half year wait for that elusive Premier League victory.

Davis looked set to be the hero at Portman Road as the full-back made his 100th appearance for the club with a brilliantly controlled volley to break the deadlock.

But McKenna never took anything for granted. His team had already dropped 10 points from winning positions this season, including a two-goal loss at Brentford in the last game.

They faced an uphill battle when Phillips was given his marching orders for his second late tackle of the game.

Encouraged by the home crowd, Ipswich held on desperately as Burgess produced a superb effort to deny Ayew on the line.

However, this was not the case as Ayew lost a point to the visiting team. The expectation of a win continues and the Tractor Boys will not be full of confidence with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United waiting for them in the next two games.

Another Leicester late show

Leicester were keen to be third time lucky as they suffered back-to-back defeats in all competitions.

But a third straight defeat loomed for Cooper, who watched from the stands with his assistant Alan Tate keeping his seat on the bench warm. Leicester would not panic as they followed.

As a result, in their last away Premier League match, the Foxes came from 2-0 behind against Southampton and managed to grab all three points, and Ayew scored the winning goal in the 98th minute.

Two weeks later he was in the same situation again. Ayew had already issued a warning when he neatly lifted Muric just minutes after being introduced, but it was overruled by Burgess.

But after a few minutes there was no stopping him. Sliding into the box, he played a delightful one-two with Vardy before turning home to silence Portman Road.

It was important that the Foxes went to East Anglia with nothing in their next two games against Manchester United and Chelsea.
