ATHLETES made their mark at Laurieton Oval for the first session of the Camden Haven Junior Athletics season on Wednesday 23 October.

A total of 83 young athletes between the ages of 5-17 will participate in eight age groups.

Club nights are held every Wednesday and the season runs from October to March.

Athletes rotate in various running, jumping and throwing stations with disciplines appropriate to the age, ability and developmental stage of the participants.

Camden Haven Little Athletics spokeswoman Lorna Morson said the benefits of the program are numerous.

He described Junior Athletics as a safe, family-friendly environment where children can develop their athletic abilities while growing socially.

“Little Athletics offers a range of activities that support children to discover their strengths, identify their personal best and instill a sense of achievement,” said Lorna.

“Club level activities are run solely by volunteer parents and it takes a lot of parental power to make this magic happen for our children.

“We have a great committee with many generous assistants who volunteer their time and efforts, but we would love to know if there are any other local coaches in the community who would like to participate.”

Casey and Dylan Luke have been active in Little Athletics for the past nine years.

What initially appealed to Casey and his family was the diversity of activities in which the Luke children each found their niche in hurdles, shot put and discus throw.

But a sense of continuous improvement and shared responsibility ensured their continued involvement.

“Little As is the only sport where family involvement is not only encouraged but essential to running a successful club,” Casey said.

“I have previously been a committee member and club secretary but my focus this year will be on the district carnival.”

The HART Sports Region Junior Track and Field Championships will be held at Stuarts Point from November 30 to December 1.

Clubs from Forster to Stuarts Point will take part.

Off the track, the Bonny Hills Rural Fire Department held a barefoot bowling fundraiser at Club North Haven on Nov. 2 to support the Cooper family.

Funds raised will be donated to the ongoing medical expenses of Steve Cooper, president of Camden Haven Little Athletics.
