Eight years on and still no justice for murder of local young couple

Two local families are still searching for answers after a young couple was found dead eight years ago.

Metro police said 20-year-old Nehemiah “Neo” Kauffman and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Sydney Land, were shot to death at their apartment near Hualapai and Peace Road on Oct. 26, 2016.

“Sydney was a lively girl,” said Steve Land, Sydney’s father. “She loved life. She was a very giving, spontaneous girl who participated in everything. She was friends with everyone.”

A friend found the couple dead when he went to their home, according to LVMPD.

Police suspected a man named Shane “Suga” Valentine in the horrific crime. Valentine was also accused of opening fire at Kauffman’s mother’s home about three weeks before the double murder.

No one has been charged in the murders of Land and Kauffman.

Steve Land, an engineer with the Clark County Fire Department, remembers arriving at the scene and speaking with officers.

“We do searches together with these police officers all the time,” he said. “When they see my face, they say, ‘What are you doing here?’ They said, ‘That’s my daughter inside.’ They couldn’t believe it, it was so hard.”

This case then took a complex turn.

Local judge Melanie Tobiasson was accused of interfering in the case and was forced to resign from her post. He believed that Valentine was trying to persuade Tobiasson’s own daughter into prostitution.

Police are still seeking answers in the case regarding the murders of Land and Kauffman.

Land said he spoke with LVMPD two months ago and hopes new investigators will find answers in the case.

“Every holiday there is an empty seat,” he said. “Holidays and birthdays are spent in the cemetery instead of at the kitchen table with loved ones. So it’s hard. We still stay in touch with her college roommates. One of her best friends even named her daughter Sydney. But someone knows. People know what happened, and they don’t come forward.”

Anyone with information about this double homicide is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
