In a retrospective interview, Aishwarya Rai revealed how the Roka ceremony was performed after Abhishek Bachchan proposed to her.

Aishwarya revealed that the Roka ceremony took place suddenly and without her father present. Since she was out of town, the Bachchan family came to her house for the ceremony. He said: “I didn’t even know there was such a thing as ‘Roka’. We are South Indian, so I don’t know what Roka is, and suddenly we got a call from their house; we are coming.”

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also said, “Abhishek said, we are all coming and I cannot stop my father. We are on our way. We are coming to your house. I thought, Oh my God, what is happening.”

The engagement was also surprising because Aishwarya’s father Krishnaraj Rai was not in the city at that time. Usually both parents are present at such important ceremonies, but Aishwarya’s father had to mark his presence over the phone. The actor said, “Since my father was not there, we made this engagement by calling him.”
