LONDON (AP) – A member of the British Parliament was suspended from office by the Labor Party on Sunday after a video emerged showing him punching a man and knocking him to the ground.

Mike Amesbury, 55, of Runcorn and Helsby in north-west England, has been suspended pending an investigation into the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Surveillance footage obtained by Mail Online shows Amesbury punching a man in the face on the pavement, knocking him onto the street. He then continued to hit the man while he was on the ground as others shouted at him to stop.

Amesbury released a statement Saturday saying it had contacted authorities and would cooperate with any investigation. Cheshire police said they were investigating a reported assault on High Street in Frodsham.

“Last night I was involved in an incident that occurred after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends,” Amesbury said.

On Saturday, a video appeared on social media showing Amesbury scolding a man on the street. Amesbury pointed his finger at the man and shouted: “You’re not going to threaten me again, are you?”

Amesbury said on social media Friday that he would attend a local meeting about policing and community safety.

Last year a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking Amesbury at his constituency office in Frodsham.
