Kiyan Anthony follows in his father’s footsteps at Syracuse

“Only one person could be left at the end of the day,” Kiyan Anthony said in his father’s message. “7pm in Brooklyn” podcast, Her mother, La La Anthony, was also seated next to her for the announcement. “And with that, I will be committed to Syracuse University.”

He put on his Syracuse hat, then hugged his parents.

“We can start working now,” Carmelo Anthony said.

La La Anthony added: “I can breathe now.”

Kiyan Anthony created plenty of excitement this past summer, scoring multiple goals while averaging nearly 20 points per game on the Nike EYBL circuit for Team Melo, a program co-founded by his father. He even took part in a game at New York’s famous Rucker Park this summer, where many former NBA players watched.

“I’m tougher on him than his dad when it comes to basketball, I’m tougher on him than his dad. . . . And then it just clicked and we see all that hard work and all the hours paying off,” La La Anthony said.

It had long been assumed that Kiyan Anthony would choose the Orange, just as his father did en route to leading Syracuse to the 2003 NCAA title in his lone college season. Syracuse’s basketball office and training complex was named the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center as the longtime NBA star donated $3 million to the $19 million facility.

“My message to him was: don’t be afraid, embrace it,” Carmelo Anthony said on the podcast. “The men who look at me and watch me are not your fans. You have the opportunity to build a completely new fan base. My (time) was 20 years ago. . . . “You have a new fan base, you have a new energy.”

Carmelo Anthony made a huge impact in his one year at Syracuse. He averaged 22.2 points and 10 rebounds per game, was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player as the Orange won the national championship, and was the national freshman of the year.

He played 19 seasons in the NBA, made 10 All-Star teams, finished with an average of 22.5 points, still ranks 10th all-time on the league’s career scoring list, and was selected as part of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team. He won three Olympic gold medals with USA Basketball and was on the court in Paris with Kiyan as the Americans captured their fifth consecutive Olympic title at the Paris Games last summer.

Kiyan Anthony has already done some name, image and likeness deals and has his own business interests, plus he worked for a time with famous basketball coach Chris Brickley, whose long list of clients includes LeBron James.
