Two family members from Minnesota were killed when their SUV crashed into a semitrailer truck that was partially pulled over in the traffic lane along the Kansas Turnpike and then crashed into another semitrailer that was stopped.

The crash happened around 4:10 a.m. Monday on northbound Interstate 35 near Wichita, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Among those killed in the crash were 78-year-old Thomas Reller and 27-year-old Octavia Reller, according to the patrol. Both were from Zumbrota.

A patrol statement said the Minnesotan’s SUV was “partially on the roadway in the previous crash” when a semi-truck crashed into the large truck, which was then struck by another semi-truck involved in the earlier crash.

The two semi drivers escaped with minor injuries, the patrol said.
