Coming to MLB: The next Japanese sensation

Attention MLB fans:It’s time to get to know Rōki Sasaki. The 23-year-old Japanese ace will be transferred this summer and your favorite team has a chance to land him.

Japan’s next phenomenon: The young righty, who won the World Baseball Classic alongside Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto last year, has a 2.10 ERA with 505 strikeouts (against just 88 walks) in 394.2 innings pitched over the past four seasons with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s NPB. owner.

  • You may have heard about him in 2022 when he pitched a perfect 19-inning game and then followed that up with another eight perfect innings and 14 strikeouts in his next start.

  • The fastest throw ever recorded, 102.5 mph, matched Ohtani’s hardest throw ever thrown by a Japanese player.

What makes it so good? Sasaki’s three-pitch arsenal includes a four-seam fastball that would be among the fastest pitches in MLB, a slider that’s good but needs some work, and a good splitter. I’ll let Jake Mintz of Yahoo Sports explain:

If Sasaki’s fastball is a unicorn, his splitter is a unicorn that breathes fire, speaks five languages, and cooks top-notch risotto. There’s really nothing like it.

Worried? Durability. He has never thrown more than 130 pitches in a season, and given his age and how hard he throws, arm surgery is a likely possibility.

Sasaki’s unique situation: Yamamoto, a similarly highly touted prospect, signed with the Dodgers for $325 million after being transferred last summer, while Sasaki’s age means he won’t cost more than $7 million.

  • The posting process still works the same way: Once he’s officially designated for assignment, teams have 45 days to negotiate with him.

  • But because Sasaki is under 25, he is subject to the same rules as free agents in, say, the Dominican Republic, meaning teams can only use international bonus pool money (about $7 million this year) to sign him.

What they say: Sasaki’s decision to post early and give up hundreds of millions of dollars is rare, but not unprecedented. In 2017, Ohtani was appointed to the position at the age of 23 for a paltry $2.3 million bonus; this is a composition that Jake and Jordan Shusterman discuss in their interviews. Latest episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast.

  • Jordan: “Sasaki gave us a scenario where it’s not about who can afford it, but where they want to play.”

  • -Jake: “The precedent of the Ohtani incident applies here. Because if we remember that time in our lives when we felt like everyone had a chance to get it, it’s very rare.”

What to watch: Sasaki’s decision may depend on the timing of his appointment.

  • If before December 1st, teams must use their existing bonus pools and only the Dodgers and Orioles. I have more than 2 million dollars left.

  • If it’s after Dec. 1, the 45-day period will allow them to sign him when the pool replenishes on Jan. 15, putting all 30 teams on financial parity.

So who can sign it? All 30 teams looking to hire MLB’s No. 2 free agent for such an affordable amount, but some are clearly favored to win the young ace. Unsurprisingly, the Dodgers are at the top of the list.
