In the past 35 days, messages of love and support have poured in for Angulo, but it was announced this morning that he died due to his injuries.

Independiente Juniors defender Roberto Cabezas Simisterra and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, cousin of Cuniburo Football Club star Diogo Nazareno, also died in the accident.

The Ford Explorer in which Angulo was traveling is thought to have crashed into a metal structure on the Ruminahui highway, southeast of Quito, around 4:30 a.m.

The former Independiente Juniors star made 16 appearances in all competitions for LDU Quito; the last of these came against Orense in Ecuador’s top flight on 6 October, the day before the crash.

Angulo, who was called up to Ecuador’s senior squad for the first time in November 2022, would make his debut in a goalless draw against Iraq.

Angulo made his third and final appearance as a late substitute in Ecuador’s 3-1 win over Bolivia in June.
