Liberals can’t afford to cut Trump supporters out of their lives

Atlantic Staff writer Tom Nichols visited X last week to encourage his followers to cut ties with their families. Embers-supportive family. HE writes“Family is irreplaceable, especially parents. But replace ‘Trump’ with ‘David Duke’ and ask: Do I want to hang out with my uncle or cousin who thinks David Duke is cool? ‘Trump is not Duke’ is not an answer: He is more dangerous. Some things are beyond politics.”

Nichols isn’t the only one. Open MSNBCYale University psychiatry chief assistant Dr. Amanda Calhoun I told the audience They should feel justified in cutting ties with groups that support Trump family members. In fact, he advised viewers that such a move “may be necessary for your mental health.”

HERE WILL BE THE FIRST BIDEN ADMINISTRATOR’S ORDER TO TRUMP

But instead of demonizing or ostracizing our loved ones who voted for President-elect Donald Trump, those of us who did not vote for him should listen to them and try to understand their perspective.

Many leftists have been living in an environment of advanced terror since the election. New York Post reports: “Shocked and disturbed by President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, liberals in deep blue New York City are flooding the inboxes of psychiatrists seeking appointments.” Author Jill Filipovic identified the source of terrorism when he wrote“(T)her election was not an indictment of Kamala Harris. “This was an indictment against America.”

However, this terror is a kind of self-torture. We become paranoid when we believe half the country is mustachioed traitors and white supremacists. Fear drains our energy and joy in the world, leaving us constantly angry and tense. It pulls us away from the present moment and into a horror movie populated by an endless parade of bogeymen out to get us. This is not the way to live.

But if those of us who didn’t vote for Trump went out and talked to our loved ones who supported Trump, we wouldn’t find bogeymen. In place of white supremacists, we find a broad-based, multiracial coalition: Trump just won 55% of white voters, 45% of Hispanic voters and 65% of Native American voters. Instead of monsters supporting Trump’s most incendiary comments, we would find voters who just want a functioning economy (Trump won 86% of voters who said the economy was “poor”).

Trump’s coalition looks less like the KKK and more like the kind of multi-ethnic, working-class coalition Democrats are always trying to attract. Realizing this can force us to rethink our priorities. It can also provide deep relief from our fear. Leaving aside the question of whether the orange man is evil, it would certainly be good news to discover that most of his supporters are not.

Another reason leftists should listen to Trump supporters is that Trump appeals to many marginalized people. Embers to win 63% of voters never went to college. He won 80 percent of voters who saw “the economy” as their top issue, in part because many of those people were struggling. He received 74 percent of the vote among voters who said inflation was causing “serious hardship” on their families. Many of Trump’s voters are the kind of struggling, disenfranchised Americans that the Left was once proud to help. Listening to these voters rather than demonizing them would represent a return to the Left’s roots.

If leftists want to understand the people who voted for Trump, this is a great way to start Brave AngelsA national nonprofit organization focused on reducing toxic polarization. Among other offers, Sets up 1:1 conversations Between liberals and conservatives, so that each side can better understand the other. In these challenging times, such conversations can be a powerful antidote to rising terrorism.
