Part of the coil bomb found on Guernsey’s south coast will be detonated on Saturday morning.

The ammunition was found at the bottom of a cliff in Saint’s Bay by a fisherman who notified Guernsey Police on Friday.

Police said the ammunition was “only partially intact” and they expected it to be “much less powerful” than a roller mine previously detonated at Icart.

They said the explosive ordnance team was planning a controlled explosion around 09:30 BST and asked the public to avoid the area until the afternoon.

Police also advised owners in the area to secure or escort their animals.

They said: “We do not intend to cause unnecessary stress and it is not expected to be too noisy.

“But, as always, we try to be as careful as possible.”

Hundreds of rolling bombs were suspended from the cliffs on the south coast of the island by German occupation forces during World War II, which would fall and be cut off to prevent landing at the bottom of the cliffs.
