Surveillance video shows new footage of fatal motorcycle crash caused by driver falling asleep at the wheel in Miami Beach – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI BEACH, FL. (WSVN) – Surveillance video captured new footage of a deadly collision on the streets of Miami Beach.

The new angle, obtained exclusively by 7News, comes from an ATM camera near the corner of 41st Street and Meridian Avenue and captured the moment a pickup truck hit a motorcyclist on April 15.

Miami Beach Police said it was a case of vehicular homicide and reckless driving.

Minutes after the accident, body camera video shows Police teams tended to the victim who was thrown 90 meters away from the scene of the accident.

“Sir, the fire rescue team is on the way, okay?” an officer said to the victim. “Do you understand what’s going on?”

“He’s not responding,” the officer told another responding officer.

Medical teams immediately came to the aid of the injured man. A few seconds later, it was recorded on the body camera that the truck driver was helping the victim.

“Are you the driver of the vehicle?” he asked the officers.

“Yes I am,” said Patrick Schiebel, 33, who was driving the truck.

“Okay,” said an officer.

That night Schiebel was allowed to go home. It took four months for him to be arrested after the accident.

Officers said Schiebel admitted to falling asleep at the wheel.

He stated before the crash occurred that he “last remembered seeing a Welcome to Miami Beach sign,” according to the arrest report.

In this accident, a 34-year-old motorcyclist who was waiting at a red light to turn left on 41st Street died, and according to police officers, he was not at fault in any way.

“You have the right to remain silent,” a police officer told Schiebel during his arrest.

An internal affairs investigation has also been opened into the police department’s handling of this case. This investigation is still ongoing. Traffic Homicide Investigator Richard Rodriguez has been reassigned, police said.

Detectives did not give a reason why it took so long to make an arrest.

Schiebel has been released from prison and is awaiting trial.
