The MP was first elected to the House of Commons in 2010, representing Weaver Vale.

He was elected for the redrawn constituency of Runcorn and Helsby at the last election.

He was elected with a majority of 14,696 votes in the July general elections.

A former shadow housing minister, he is currently a member of two House of Commons committees: the Housing Communities and Local Government Committee and the Modernization Committee.

In July 2023, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking and harassing Amesbury at his constituency office and around the town.

The Manchester-born MP is a former careers consultant and has worked with Deputy Chancellor Angela Rayner and Manchester Metro Mayor Andy Burnham.
